Three Letters of William Gladstone

Three autograph letters signed by William Gladstone (1809-1898), considered one of Britain’s most important Prime Ministers.  He began his political career as a Conservative MP for Newark, but later became the leader of the Liberal Party. In a career lasting over 60 years, he was Prime Minister for 12 years, spread over four non-consecutive terms (the most of any British prime minister) beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894. He also was Chancellor of the Exchequer four times, for over 12 years. He was a Member of Parliament for 60 years, from 1832 to 1845 and from 1847 to 1895; during that time he represented a total of five constituencies.

These letters, all from Hawarden Castle, Chester, were written during the peak period of his career.

1.     A December 15, 1863, letter is to Miss Mackenzie, a frequent correspondent, 5 pp., provides his detailed opinions on a book which she had given him.

2.     A February 6, 1865 letter, 2 pp. to the publisher Richard Bentley, regarding a work (possibly on Homer) that Bentley had proposed to him.

3.      A January 12, 1873, letter, to "My Dear Gordon", 2 pp., on political concerns, including "the Irish matter."
